Abstract: Minghui 63,the first breakthrough in elite restoring lines in China by artificial restoration research,was bred by crossing IR30 with Gui 630 in spring 1981.Minghui 63 has such characteristics as strong ability in restoration,broad in restoring spectrum,high combining ability,fine comprehensive argonomic characters,resistance to rice blast and high yield in seed production.It is not only a good restoring line for prominent benefit,with the widest areas and the longest duration of continued utilization in Chinese hybrid rice production,but also a fine germplasm of the greatest contribution in selecting new restoring lines.In 1984-1996,18 hybrid rice combination from restoring line Minghui 63 had been developed to an accumulated area of 65 60 million hm², among which Shanyou 63 had an area of 52 67 million hm².A series of new restoring lines were developed from Minghui 63 as the main parent,among which 17 combinations were examined and approved by the provincial authorities concerned.Based on past years of extension practice,experience and statistical data systems, the selection procedure,characteristics and utilization value of this restoring line was described.
